Crest High’s Tana Schooler looks over the defense during a recent home game. Schooler and the Lady Lancers figured things out for a strong second half Monday to win 60-34 over visiting Altoona-Midway in 1A regional play.

COLONY — Sixteen minutes — that’s all the time Crest High’s Lady Lancers had left. They trailed visiting Altoona-Midway High 19-16 at halftime Monday.
“I told them they had 16 minutes to make up their minds what they were going to do. We lose we’re done,” said Brent Smith, Lady Lancer head coach.
The Lady Lancers provided the answer to their coach’s challenge in a dominatating way. Crest erased the three-point deficit with a 31-2 run in the third quarter.
The Jets never caught up and the Lady Lancers posted a 60-34 victory. It came in the first round of the Kansas Class 1A Regional Tournament.
“They’re fun to watch when they play like that. We got more intense in the second half and our shots started to fall which increased our shooting confidence,” Smith said.
Awaiting Crest (8-13) in the semifinal round is top-seeded and fifth-ranked Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans. Southern Coffey County (18-2) plays Crest at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The regional tournament is hosted by Southern Coffey County High with the semifinals and championship games held at Allen County Community College in Iola. The girls’ semifinals are Thursday and the boys’ semifinals are Friday.

The Lady Lancers were led by Kerry Stoneking and Tana Schooler with 12 points each. Becca Honn added 10 points. Eight players scored for Crest.
“We had a lot of contributions in our second half play. We got good play off the bench in the guard spot by Ashley Catt and Alysha Westhoff,” Smith said.
Kaylee Leck hit 12 of 16 free throw attempts for the Jets as she scored 18 points.
Also on Monday, Chetopa defeated Elk Valley girls 59-47. Chetopa (8-11) plays St. Paul (17-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday in semifinal action.
