Lady Cubs upend Lady Chargers

CHERRYVALE — Freshman Hannah McCall sank one of two free throws with under 30 seconds to go. It provided a four-point lead for Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs.
Cherryvale High’s Lady Chargers could not come up with a three-point field goal to get any closer. The Lady Cubs won 59-54 Tuesday in Tri-Valley League play at Cherryvale.
“Our girls played under control and when Cherryvale made runs at us we stopped them after a couple of baskets. They never were able to extend runs on us,” said Jeff Wilkerson, HHS girls’ head coach.
The victory moved Humboldt to 6-6 in league play and 11-7 overall. The Lady Cubs go to Eureka Friday.
The Lady Cubs turned around an 18-15 deficit with an 18-5 surge in the second quarter. Cherryvale outscored Humboldt 17-15 in the third quarter but the Lady Cubs held on down the stretch.
Kelci Owens fired in 25 points for Humboldt. Lenzie Boring added 13 and Callie Umholtz had 11. Megan Dillow scored nine and McCall had her one point.
Humboldt was 13 of 29 from the free-throw line.
Cherryvale was led by Sara Schwaniger with 17 points and Kelsey Overacker with 15 points. The Lady Chargers sank 11 of 21 free throw attempts.
