Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs were seeded No. 1 in the 2009 Kansas Class 2-1A State Softball Tournament when brackets were released Thursday.
It’s the Lady Cubs’ third trip straight trip to the 2-1A state competition. Humboldt is among four returning teams from last year’s softball state tournament.
The tournament is May 29-30 at Emporia’s Trusler Sports Complex, utilizing two fields.
Humboldt’s girls are 20-1 and face eighth-seeded Dexter/Cedar Vale (11-12) in the opening round next Friday. Game time is 5 p.m. on Field A.
Oxford (17-5) is seeded fourth and plays fifth-seeded Salina-Sacred Heart (16-5) at 7 p.m.
The winner of those two games meet in Saturday’s semifinal at 10 a.m.
Spearville (16-3), another returning team, is the No. 2 seed. It plays defending champion St. Marys (16-7), which is seeded seventh, in the first round.
Taking the No. 3 seed in the state softball tournament is Pittsburg-St. Mary’s-Colgan (19-4). Colgan knocked Humboldt out of last year’s tournament by a 2-1.
Colgan plays Johnson-Stanton County (17-6) in the first round.
Teams have to win on Friday or go home. Kansas high school softball and baseball state tournaments are set up just like the basketball tournaments.
Semifinals are at 10 a.m. Saturday. The third-place game is at noon. The Class 2-1A state championship game is at 1 p.m. on Field A.
