UNIONTOWN — The express train which is Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs knocked off another team Thursday.
In non-league play, the Lady Cubs “overpowered” host Uniontown High’s Eagles 14-0 and 13-0. Undefeated Humboldt controlled the games as Lenzie Boring allowed only three hits by the Eagles.
“Their pitcher overpowered us and for the most part we were not able to get runners on base,” said Alan Shinn, Eagle head coach. “Defensively, we made some mistakes and Humboldt took advantage of those.”
Boring threw a one-hit shutout in the opener. She struck out 11 Eagles in the five-inning contest.
Callie Umholtz tripled and singled. Boring had two singles and four RBIs and Rachel Green hit two singles and drove in two runs as did Kelci Owens.
Megan Dillow had two base hits and four stolen bases for Humboldt. Taylyn Wells singled.
Humboldt had a 5-0 lead by the end of two innings. The Lady Cubs scored four in the fourth and five in the fifth to put the game away.
Candice Clayton had the one base hit for Uniontown. Tayler Shook was the losing pitcher, walking seven, hitting 11 batters and striking out three.
The Lady Cubs used six-run innings in the third and fifth to win the second game 13-0. Boring allowed two hits and walked one batter while recording nine strikeouts.
Ithaca Marlier pitched for the Eagles. She allowed 17 hits and struck out three. Shook had a double and Cassie Schwalm singled.
Leading the Humboldt offense were Dillow and Green with three singles each and both had three stolen bases. Umholtz and Hannah McCall each hit a single and a double.
Hitting two singles each were Owens, Boring and Wells. Bailey Myers had a base hit.
“Twenty-eight hits in 10 innings. That’s what we need going into regionals,” said Brad Piley, Lady Cub head coach.
But the Lady Cubs, who are 16-0 overall and 10-0 on Tri-Valley League, can’t focus on the regional quite yet. They host Caney Valley, which is also undefeated in league play, Monday.
Last year, Caney Valley upended the Lady Cubs to spoil their TVL run.
Uniontown is 6-5 overall. It is 6-0 in Three Rivers League play and goes to Chetopa Monday.
