Lady Cubs pull out win over Yellowjackets

FREDONIA — Lenzie Boring sank two free throws with 1.2 seconds on the game clock as Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs survived on the road Tuesday.
In their final Tri-Valley League and regular season game of the season, the Lady Cubs beat Fredonia 41-38. The Lady Cubs were up by eight points with 15 seconds left in the contest.
“They banked in a three-pointer then had a three-point play so we saw a six-point turnaround in about seven seconds,” said Jeff Wilkerson, Humboldt head coach.
Humboldt failed to convert two free throw tries with eight seconds left. Fredonia’s Christina Graves had an opportunity to tie the game at the free-throw line. She hit one of two and Boring pulled the rebound for Humboldt and was fouled.
“Our girls did an outstanding job rebounding in the game. We limited turnovers and that was a big factor,” Wilkerson said.
Humboldt trailed 23-19 at halftime then took the lead on a 9-4 run in the third quarter. The Lady Cubs finished at 7-7 in TVL play for a tie for third place.
Kelci Owens led the Lady Cubs with 18 points. They were 12 of 28 at the line.
Kaitlyn Rogers scored 16 points for Fredonia. The Yellowjackets were 10 of 18 at the free-throw line.
Humboldt (12-8) is expected to be the No. 3 seed in next week’s Class 2A substate tournament. It will play a home game Tuesday.
Official seedings and pairings will be announced later today.
