Lady Cubs run record to 6-0

BURLINGTON — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs continued their winning ways for the young 2009 softball season.
The Lady Cubs defeated host Burlington High Wildcats 14-1 and 11-3 Tuesday. The victories put Humboldt atop the Tri-Valley League at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in league play.
“We played well in the first game but we need to play as hard in the second game as we do in the first,” said Brad Piley, Lady Cub head coach. “We have not done that this year.”
Humboldt led 6-1 through four innings in the opener and then scored eight runs in the fifth.
Lenzie Boring was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out eight.
Megan Dillow connected for a double and triple and had three stolen bases. Boring had a single and a double and drove in five runs. Kelci Owens and Bailey Myers each had two singles and Owens stole three bases. Hannah McCall doubled. Callie Umholtz, Melissa Davidson and Rachel Green each had a single.
With Boring on the mound in the second contest, the Lady Cubs got out to a 3-1 lead after four innings. Humboldt scored three more in the fifth, then gave up three runs to Burlington in its half of the inning. The Lady Cubs plated five runs in the seventh frame.
Boring surrendered eight hits but didn’t issue a walk. She struck out nine.
Owens cranked out three singles and had four stolen bases.
Boring doubled and had two singles. Owens and Boring each had three RBIs. Myers singled twice while Dillow and Davidson each had a base hit.
The Humboldt baseball team split with Burlington Tuesday. The Register did not receive a report on the games but did find the scores.
Burlington won the first game 16-10. Humboldt claimed a 19-12 win in the second contest. The Cubs are 3-1 overall and in Tri-Valley League play.
Humboldt hosts Eureka next Tuesday.
