Lady Cubs fall in OT

EUREKA — Humboldt High’s girls were able to drain a key basket at the end of regulation to force overtime Friday.
But a pair of field goal attempts to win the contest at the end of the extra session were off the mark and the Lady Cubs dropped a 50-49 decision to host Eureka High.
“That’s how the story goes,” Humboldt head coach Jeff Wilkerson said. “I’m proud of the girls. They worked hard, but we had some defensive letdowns.”
Humboldt grabbed the early advantage 22-14. Eureka chipped away at the lead, trailing 31-26 at halftime and knotting the score at 38-38 after three periods.
The Tornadoes led 44-42 as the clock neared :00, when Kelci Owens’ short jumper bounced around the rim “for what seemed like forever,” Wilkerson said.
Owens, who surpassed the 1,000-point barrier for her high school career in the game, wound up with 22 points to the Lady Cubs. Lenzie Boring followed with 17.
Haley Pitko led Eureka with 18 points. Taylyn Schwartz added 13.
Humboldt, 11-8 overall and 6-7 in Tri-Valley League play, travels to Fredonia Tuesday.
