Jayhawks no match for the Wildcat girls

MOUND CITY — Host Jayhawk-Linn High wasted little time in establishing firm control in their tilt against visiting Marmaton Valley High’s girls Tuesday.
The Jayhawks steamrolled their way to a 29-2 lead after one quarter in a 62-21 win.
The loss ends Marmaton Valley’s pre-Christmas schedule record at 1-4. The Wildcats resume play Jan. 5 at home against Frontenac.
Wildcat head coach Kent Houk knew going into the game that Jayhawk-Linn would be a formidable foe. That squad qualified for the state tournament and returned many key players this season. It is ranked eighth in Class 2A.
“We know we have a lot of work to do to get to their level,” Houk said. “They’re a solid team. We need to work on moving and getting our easy shots to fall.”
But most importantly, Marmaton Valley’s Christmas break will stress defense, Houk said.
“If there’s one bright spot, it’s that we’ve been averaging 30 turnovers a game,” Houk said. “Tonight, we only had 20.”
Jayhawk-Linn led 47-6 at intermission and 55-14 after three periods.
Kailey Boyd led Marmaton Valley with nine points, followed by Maggie Meiwes with seven points and eight rebounds. Alysha Westhoff added four points and four assists. Daniella Howell scored two points.
