Iola High’s softball and baseball fields at Riverside Park were too wet to play on Monday. It was decided that the Fillies would travel to Parsons Monday to play and the Parsons boys would come to Iola Tuesday for baseball.
But a lunchtime tragedy in Parsons Monday made it necessary to postpone the softball games. A makeup date is not yet set.
Chris Cornell, a Parsons High senior, was killed Monday afternoon when his motorcycle struck a trailer that had been pulled in front of him, according to The Parsons Sun.
A senior at PHS, Cornell had completed most of his graduation requirements in the first semester of the school year. Deb Perbeck, superintendent of USD 503, said Cornell was attending school for an hour a day this semester. His mother, Belinda, also works as a paraprofessional in the district.
IHS athletic director Martin Bambick said Parsons High’s baseball team will play in Iola this afternoon. Action begins at 4:30 at Iola’s Riverside Park.
