Iola JV has tough tournament

INDEPENDENCE — Tournament play didn’t go as planned Saturday for Iola High’s junior varsity volleyball team.
The Fillies went 1-2 in pool play at the Independence High junior varsity tournament.
Pittsburg defeated Iola 25-19, 25-15 in the opening match. Iola bounced back with a 25-19, 25-22 win over Columbus but lost to Fredonia 25-17, 23-25, 15-4.
“We struggled in the first match as we couldn’t pass or serve the ball well,” said Chrissy Powell, IHS assistant coach. “Passing was a major problem for us all day.
“We hit the ball well in the final match but came up short in the end.”
Against Pittsburg, Riana Dolenz served five points and had two ace serves plus downed two kills and had two stuff blocks at the net. Kelsey Adams delivered four kills.
Serving two points each were Keli Lee, Carly Mulsow and Adams. Tori Snavely and Kirstin McGuffin each had one service point as McGuffin’s came on an ace. Snavely, McGuffin and Mulsow each had a kill.
Mulsow served up 10 points, four coming on ace serves, against Columbus. Lee had five service points and one ace while Adams had four points and two aces and Dolenz had four points and one ace.
McGuffin had three points, all ace serves. Snavely served two points.
Leading the net attack was Dolenz with five kills and one block. Mulsow had four kills and Snavely had two kills. McGuffin and Adams each had one kill.
In the Fredonia match, Dolenz served for seven points with two aces while McGuffin had five service points. Lee and Mulsow each had three service points and one ace and Snavely served two points.
