Iola Indians split a pair at Baldwin

BALDWIN — Derrek McKarnin threw a three-hitter as Iola American Legion Post 15’s Indians dialed up a 12-1 win Tuesday at Baldwin.
The Indians were down 1-0 after an inning, then went to work at the plate. They used a 12-hit attack to score two or more runs in each of the next four innings.
McKarnin walked two and struck out seven Baldwin batters.
Iola scored three runs in the second and two more in the third for a 5-1 lead. In the fourth, Drew Mueller singled then Chris Heffern and McKarnin had back-to-back RBI doubles.
Keatin Herder reached on a fielder’s choice and Corey Taylor was hit by a pitch. Jerrik Sigg reached on an error as two more runs scored in the frame.
Iola scored two runs in the fifth, held Baldwin scoreless in its half of the inning and earned a run-rule win.
Chris Heffern, McKarnin and Taylor each had a single and a double. Mueller hit two singles. Sigg tripled. Clint Heffern, Ethan Ericson and Nick Cook each had a single.
In the second game, Baldwin took a 2-1 victory. Ethan Ericson was the losing pitcher as he tossed a two-hitter. He walked two and struck out nine.
Mueller had two singles and scored the lone Iola run in the first inning. Cook had a base hit.
Mueller singled, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. McKarnin’s sacricfie fly drove in the run.
