Iola Indians lose to Burlington

BURLINGTON — Iola American Legion’s Indians had trouble on the road Thursday.
They gave up a 5-2 lead to host Burlington and ended up losing 6-5 in 10 innings. Burlington scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings.
The Indians tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the third. Iola took the lead on a three-run fifth inning.
Derrek McKarnin, Iola starter, went five innings, allowing two runs on one hit and two hit batters. He struck out two but did not figure in the decision.
Ryan Latta pitched 4 1/3 innings and took the loss. Latta surrendered four runs on four hits and one walk plus struck out four. Keatin Herder pitched in the 10th, giving up a hit.
Drew Mueller singled and tripled. Chris Heffern had a single and a double. Mark Bristol doubled. Corey Taylor, Jerrik Sigg and Latta had a single apiece.
In the second game, Burlington led 3-1 after three innings. Burlington added four more runs in the fourth on its way to a 7-2 victory over Iola.
Bristol was the losing pitcher for the Indians. He worked four innings and was charged with seven runs on three hits, one walk and four hit batters. He struck out two. Sigg pitched two scoreless innings and gave up one hit, walked one and struck out three.
Drew Walden doubled for the Indians. Herder, McKar-nin and Sigg each had a single.
The Iola American Legion baseball team hosts its annual tournament this weekend. Games will be played Saturday and Sunday at Allen County Community College’s field.
