PARSONS — Iola Middle School’s volleyball teams finished their season Tuesday in makeup matches at Parsons Middle School.
Iola’s eighth-grade A-team lost 25-17, 25-12. Emma Sigg, Halie Cleaver and Mackenzie Weseloh each had two ace serves while Rebecca Cunningham and Darci Collins had one service ace each.
“We were right in the first set but missed way too many serves,” said Terri Carlin, IMS eighth-grade head coach. “We work hard to get the ball back then miss the serve. In the second set we weren’t talking or moving and let too many balls drop.”
Carlin said she and assistant coach Annette Rexwinkle enjoyed working with the eighth-grade teams. She said the eighth-graders didn’t record many wins but improved “tremendously throughout the season.”
“It’s great as a coach to see a girl do things like serve, spike and pass when they weren’t able to do it in August when the season started,” Carlin said.
The IMS seventh-grade A-team claimed a 12-25-25-20, 16-14 win to end the season. After struggling in the first set, the Ponies turned things around.
Kyra Moore served seven points to push Iola in front then Haley Slater and Katie Shields finished the set with more outstanding serves, according to IMS seventh-grade coach Muffy Fehr.
Shields’ four service points put Iola up in the third set but Parsons tied the set up at 14-14.
“Emma Piazza made an amazing save to regain the serve. Katie served the final two points for the win,” Fehr said.
Iola’s Gold squad played the B-team match and lost 25-16, 20-25, 15-13. Emery Driskel had four straight serves in the first set.
Brianne Jett and Hannah Stout kept the Ponies in the second set with good serving late. Ashley Cary’s defense helped keep the Ponies in a close third set.
“I’ve really enjoyed working this this bunch of girls this year. They’ve learned so much and come together as a team,” Fehr said.
