COFFEYVILLE — After going scoreless in the first quarter, Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade A-team staged a comeback in the fourth quarter Monday.
The rally came up short 20-15.
“This team played as hard tonight as any team I’ve coached,” said Marty Taylor, IMS basketball coach. “You can’t be satisfied with a loss but I’m certainly happy with the effort.”
Iola trailed 17-7 going into the fourth quarter. The Ponies outscored Coffeyville 8-3 down the stretch.
Emma Sigg led the way with five points for Iola while Paige Miller added four points. Scoring two points each were Katie Kelley, Alexis Hobbs and Chay Hutton.
In the seventh-grade A-team contest, another scoreless first quarter hampered the Iola team. Iola was down 15-7 at halftime and lost 30-19.
Haley Slater fired in 13 points for the Ponies. Emmalee Seabolt and Lexie Long each had two points. Jo Lohman and Torrie Lewis had one point apiece.
“The girls need to get on the bus ready to play basketball. We are digging ourselves too big of a hole early in these games because we aren’t ready to play,” Taylor said.
“Haley did a good job in the second half. If she plays aggressive, she can be the best player on the floor.”
The IMS teams travel to Independence Thursday.
