A three-pointer at the buzzer was just off the mark here Monday as Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade A-team lost 20-17 to visiting Anderson County Junior High’s Bulldogs.
“We just didn’t come ready to play basketball and we had to play catch-up all night,” said Marty Taylor, IMS girls’ basketball coach. “After the first three minutes, we really played well.”
Anderson County held a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was 17-9 at halftime. The Ponies outscored the Bulldogs 6-2 in the third and 2-1 in the fourth quarter.
Halie Cleaver put up the final shot from three-point distance that fell short.
Paige Miller led the Ponies with seven points followed by Alexis Hobbis with six. Katie Kelley and Chay Hutton each scored two point.
“Paige did a much better job inside tonight,” Taylor said.
Iola’s seventh-grade A-team pushed out to a 20-10 halftime lead and never allowed Anderson County back in the game. Leading 24-12, the Ponies outscored the Bulldogs 12-4 in the fourth quarter for a 36-16 win.
“The girls did a much better job of being aggressive on and off the ball,” Taylor said. “We’re getting better, we have a long way to but we are getting better.”
Haley Slater ripped the nets for 17 points for Iola. Scoring four points each were Emma Piazza, Morgan Wilson and Shelby Reno.
Katie Shields, Kyra Moore and Jo Lohman each had two points. Emmalee Seabolt had one point.
In a combined B-team contest, Iola won 12-10. Reno and Shelby Smith each had four points. Karlie Lower and Darci Collins had two points apiece.
