IMS 8th volleyball team plays

COFFEYVILLE — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade Pony girls broke even on the road in their 2009 season opening volleyball matches Thursday.
Iola’s A-team shook off a 25-20, 25-10 loss to host Coffeyville to beat Independence. The Ponies had to work hard winning 25-23, 25-23.
“The girls played more confidently against Independence. Karlie Lower did a good job playing the back row for us and being a leader on the court,” said Terri Carlin, IMS eighth-grade coach.
Emma Sigg had four service aces for Iola and one kill. Halie Cleaver served three aces and Katie Kelley had two aces. Rebecca Cunningham had two kills.
Mackenzie Weseloh and Alexis Hobbs each had two service aces and one kill. Weseloh and Cleaver each had a set assist.
Against Coffeyville, Hobbs served for five aces and had two kills. Hobbs served 10 straight points in the first set. Weseloh had one kill, one ace and one assist. Cleaver made three set assists. Paige Miller had one kill and one ace. Sigg and Cunningham each had a kill.
In B-team play, Iola lost 25-23, 25-5 to Coffeyville and split against Independence, winning 25-7 then losing 28-26. There were no individual statistics for the B-team.
Coach Annette Rexwinkle said the girls played hard in both matches.
The Ponies travel to Columbus Tuesday.
