IHS wrestlers end regular season

BURLINGTON — Iola High sophomore Marcus Sullivan captured first place in the 160-pound weight class of Saturday’s Burlington High Junior Varsity Invitational.
Sullivan had two wins by decisions — 13-6 over Haviland of Erie and 12-4 over Neil of Santa Fe Trail — and pinned Pryor of Pittsburg and Norris of Labette County.
Matt Riebel, a senior, won his 285-pound weight class bracket. He pinned Hall of Erie and Casper of Topeka Seaman.
In another 285-pound bracket, senior Orion Leigh was second. He lost to Walrod of Jayhawk-Linn by a pin. Leigh pinned Whiteaker of Seaman and Blanc of Paola.
“We wrestled really well,” said Ron Schomaker, IHS coach. “Everyone wrestled aggressively throughout the day.”
Sophomore Josh Butler was third at 215. He was pinned by Callahan of Silver Lake, then recorded wins by falls over Sherbon of Anderson County and Lofing of Osawatomie. He lost 6-2 to McGinty of Seaman.
In the 171-pound bracket, freshman Denton Christian was third. He opened with three straight pins of Bolden of Coffeyville, Macek of Osawatomie and Gigstad of Anderson County.
Christian lost by a fall to Campbell of Wellsville then dropped a 12-6 decision to Hall of Paola.
Lee Berg, a sophomore, was third at 140 pounds. He defeated Cochrane of Osa-watomie 11-4, then was pinned by Weaver of Paola and Barnes of Santa Fe Trail.
Devin Culler, a freshman, lost 11-2 to Moore of Burlington and 4-0 to Commache of Osawatomie.
“We’re looking forward to seeing how we stack up against some high-level competition in this weekend’s regional tournament,” Schomaker said.
Iola goes to Caney for the 4A regional wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday.
