IHS to host track meet

Iola High’s varsity track teams will compete at home in 2009. There were no varsity meets slated for the season — no league or regional meet.
Then IHS track coach Marvin Smith found out his varsity athletes would not be able to compete at the annual K.T. Woodman Relays in Wichita this season.
“Chanute and Iola lost out on the K.T. Woodman due to schedule changes. Neither school was able to get into another meet,” Smith said.
“We discussed among coaches whether to have just another day of practice or maybe a dual meet between the two schools would work better,” Smith said.
It was decided Iola would host a dual varsity meet April 17 with Chanute High School.
Then Humboldt High School lost the Jayhawk-Linn High track meet slated for April 14. The Cub teams were out of a varsity meet.
That was when the IHS “Bailout Stimulus Relays” were hatched.
The triangular varsity track meet is set for 4 p.m. April 17 at Iola’s Riverside Park.
“We’re calling it the Bailout Stimulus Relays because unless we get a big stimulus check from President Obama, we are not charging anyone an entry fee, we are not giving medals, are not playing a starter.”
Coaches are going to be running the events along with community volunteers from Chanute, Humboldt and Iola. Smith said anyone interested in helping with the meet should contact him at the high school, 365-4715, or a coach at Humboldt or Chanute high schools.
The meet will have all the regular track events plus a 4x200-meter relay. Smith said they play to run hurdle races and the 4x800-meter relays starting at 4:10 p.m. then take a break from running events while the field events continue.
“We would like to get lots of help because we plan on having two high jumps at the same time, two long jumps, etc.,” Smith said.
