INDEPENDENCE — Iola High junior Danette Newland had the only win in Friday’s Kansas Class 4A Regional Girls’ Tennis Tournament. The tournament was hosted by Independence High School.
Newland beat Becca Frobish of Columbus 8-5 in a play-in match. That put her into the regular tournament bracket for singles.
Newland lost to Katie Anderson of Labette County 6-0, 6-0 and was ousted from contention.
Iola senior Amanda Carr dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Theresa Wessel of El Dorado in the first round. That put her out of the tournament.
In doubles, Iola’s two pairs competed in play-in matches. If they had won, they would’ve been in the regular tournament doubles bracket.
Jasmine Bannister and Hallie Wolf lost 8-1 to Chanute’s Churning and Lawrence while Amber Snesrud and Autumn Snesrud lost 8-0 to Eckelberry and Wells of Labette County.
