IHS junior varsities do well at LCHS

ALTAMONT — Iola High’s junior varsity track teams competed at Labette County High Invitational Friday.
The Mustangs claimed top team honors with 110 points. Fort Scott was a close second at 106 points.
Fort Scott won the girls’ division title with 117 points. The Fillies were second with 87 points.
Iola’s boys turned in five gold medal performances on the day. Three of those came in field events.
Kyle Heffern won the discus with a throw of 117 feet, 10 inches. Josh Butler scored fifth-place points in the event with a throw of 90’3”.
Ralph Shafer, Heffern and Butler went 1-2-4 in the javelin. Shafer’s winning distance was 136’8” and Heffern was at 135’2”. Butler’s throw went 116’5”.
Christian Kauth needed only one jump to win the triple jump — 35’1”. Kauth anchored the winning 4x800-meter relay team. He combined with Eli Johnson, Seth Kristalyn and Dustin Jones for a first-place time of 9 minutes, 45 seconds.
Seth Browning won the 400-meter dash in 55.9 seconds. Bryan Miller claimed second in the 3200-meter run in 12:23 and Brent Clark was third in 12:33.
Johns took second in the 800-meter run in 2:23. Kristalyn placed fifth in the 1600-meter run in 5:30. Kristalyn combined with Jones, Dylan Lower and Mikal Bossell for fifth in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:14.
Lower grabbed the bronze medal in the pole vault with a clearance of 7’6”. Butler placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 35’6 1/2”.
The Fillies produced six gold medal performances.
Kirstin McGuffin won the javelin and the discus. McGuffin took the gold in the javelin with a throw of 97’5” with teammate Ty Ellis in third at 82 feet.
McGuffin won the discus with a distance of 75’3”. Hallie Wolf was third at 71’0” in the discus plus was fifth in the shot put at 24’5”.
Kendra Taiclet had a winning vault of 6 feet in the pole vault. Kelsey Larson won the high jump, going over the bar at 4’8” and teammate Celeste Ambrose was fifth at 4’4”.
The Fillies’ 4x800-meter relay team of Jordan Dillingham, Larson, Abby Works and Jamie Spears won its race in 11:29. Larson, Taiclet and Works joined Suzanne Wood to capture gold in the 4x400-meter relay race in 4:43.9.
Ellis placed third in the 100-meter high hurdles in 21.5 seconds. Kristen Linn was fourth in the 3200-meter run in 15:55.
The Fillies’ 4x100-meter relay team of Molly Maxwell, Ambrose, Ellis and Spears turned in a sixth-place time of 1:08.
Next up for the IHS junior varsity teams is a meet at Chanute Monday.
