Humboldt, Marmaton Valley, Yates Center, Uniontown sending athletes to state meet

PLEASANTON — Yates Center High’s Wildcat boys did something a bit unexpected. They won a 2009 Kansas Class 2A Regional Track championship.
“We really didn’t think we had a chance for the team title. We actually were walking to the bus when they announced it,” said Dan Berg, Yates Center head track coach.
Yates Center’s boys won four events on the track. Uniontown High’s Eagles had a regional individual champion on the boys side.
Uniontown High’s girls had a double champion in Abbie Smith. Yates Cen-ter’s Brae Adams claimed a regional championship.
There are 20 area athletes from Yates Center, Uniontown, Marmaton Valley and Humboldt qualified for this weekend’s state meet competition in Class 2A.
Last Friday, the area schools were at a Class 2A regional meet hosted by Pleasanton High School.
In the boys competition, Yates Center junior Dylan Sicka captured the 800-meter run gold medal in 2 minutes, 3.38 second and the 1600-meter run gold medal in 4:44.86.
Sicka ran a personal-best time of 10:33.70 to take second in the 3200-meter run. He also combined with senior Jacob Pennuto, junior Donnie Bennett and senior Joe Tressler to qualify in the 4x400-meter relay race in 3:37.04.
Bennett is a double regional champion in his own right. He won the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.12 seconds with Marmaton Valley High’s junior Kurtis LaRue in third place at 16.80 and Humboldt High’s senior Chris Winner in fourth at 16.81 seconds.
The top four finishers in each event advance to the state meet.
Bennett won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 42.28 seconds. LaRue was second in 42.60 seconds.
Humboldt High senior Scott Sollars was third in 43.12 seconds.
Pennuto was fourth in the 400-meter dash in 53.85 seconds. Yates Center teammate David Van Hoose, a junior, took second in the 200-meter dash in 23.75 seconds and Uniontown High junior Ben Dixon was fourth in in 23.99 seconds.
Humboldt junior Nick Miller placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.71 seconds.
Uniontown’s regional champion on the boys side was senior David Shank. Shank won the discus with a throw of 137 feet, 11 inches with teammate Colt Bartlett, a junior, in third at 126’3”. Bartlett also qualified in the shot put with a second-place finish at 46’1⁄4”.
Dixon was third in the long jump with a leap of 19’71⁄4”.
Yates Center’s Brae Adams won the girls discus with a throw of 110’3” and Uniontown High senior Katie Spainhoward was third at 106’9”.
Spainhoward placed third in the shot put as well with a toss of 36’63⁄4”. Uniontown freshman Jacy Ermel was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 86’8”.
Uniontown junior Abbie Smith claimed first place in the long jump with a leap of 16’10”. Smith also won the 100-meter high hurdles in 16 seconds.
Smith qualified in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a second place finish in 53.87 seconds.
Yates Center freshman Haley Bedell was fourth in the race in 55.24.
Marmaton Valley High sophomore Mercedes Trollope is going to state in the triple jump.
She finished fourth at 28’51⁄4”.
Uniontown sophomore Emily Aikins placed second in the 100-meter dash in 13.26 seconds and second in the 200-meter dash in 27.83.
Humboldt High sophomore Raquel Hill qualified for a second trip to the state meet. She placed fourth in the 3200-meter run in 14:07.
