Hill, Loving medal in Doc Stiles meet

Humboldt High’s Raquel Hill is ahead of a Chanute runner as the varsity girls race winds through Iola’s Riverside Park Tuesday.

In a tough field of runners for the 2009 Iola High’s Doc Stiles Invitational, Humboldt High’s Raquel Hill captured the 11th-place medal in the 4K varsity girls race Tuesday.
All four area schools — Iola, Humboldt, Crest and Yates Center — had just one runner in the varsity race.
Pittsburg High’s Purple Dragons won the team title with 47 points, followed by Chanute with 57 points and Independence with 99 points.
Paige White of Baxter Springs won the race in 16 minutes, 14 seconds. Page Miller of Pittsburg was second in 16:23.
Hill turned in a time of 17:22 for the Riverside Park course. Crest’s Italy Loving earned the 24th-place medal in 18:55.
“Raquel ran very good (Tuesday),” said Eric Carlson, Humboldt High cross country coach. “She had her best performance of the season. She is getting stronger with every race and she is pushing herself harder each race.”
Iola High’s Leah Weir finished 29th in 19:32. Yates Center’s Cherokee Shafer placed 36th in 20:57.
Pittsburg also won the girls junior varsity race with 25 points. Taking a distant second was Girard with 111 points.
Iola’s Sydney Owens claimed one of the 20 medals. She turned in a third-place time of 19:00.
Also grabbing a medal was Iola’s Kristen Linn. Linn was 14th in 19:52.
Crest’s Delanie Cammack was 29th in 22:09 and Kurston Gilliland placed 45th in 27:50.
Yates Center’s Chari Dyer ran her first cross country race Tuesday. Dyer placed 33rd in 22:45.
There was a middle school fun run held during the meet. Iola’s Blaine Klubek and Marmaton Valley’s Cole Endicott and Ashtynn Louk competed. Endicott was first, Klubek second and Louk third.
Next Thursday, Iola, Humboldt, Crest, Marmaton Valley and Yates Center runners will compete in the Central Heights High Invitational at Richmond.
