MOUND CITY — Humboldt High’s junior Raquel Hill made it three in a row Saturday.
Hill qualified for her third Kansas Class 2A State Cross Country Meet with her performance at the 2A regional meet. Hill ran the 4K girls’ race in 17 minutes, 28.54 seconds on the Sugar Valley Golf Course in Mound City.
“Raquel battled the entire time with some very talented runners. With about 300 meters to so she dug down deep and picked up her pace,” said Eric Carlson, Humboldt cross country coach.
“She pushed past two girls she was running in a pack with. I have only seen Raquel hurt after a race twice. Today was one of them.”
A year ago, Hill was an all-state Class 2A runner with her 17th-place finish at the state meet.
Marmaton Valley High’s Zachary Louk made it two-for-two. The Wildcat sophomore claimed the eighth-place medal at Saturday’s regional meet, earning his second trip to state.
Louk ran the 5K race in 17:16.22. Teammate Ryan Smith, a freshman, was 24th in 18:20.
Humboldt High’s Cubs ended up seventh as a team with 192 points. Berean Academy won the team title with 29 points.
Juniors Jacob Jones and Reece Criger were 39th and 41st, respectively, in 19:41 and 19:58. Senior Cody Wright ended up 46th in 20:33.
Freshman Nick Keazer placed 50th in 21:28 and junior Ezra Bartlett was 55th in 24:24. Freshman Dylan Greve was 58th in 32:35.
“These boys came into the meet looking to gain some experience and they did just that,” Carlson said. “They all ran re-laxed and Jacob, Reece and Nick posted personal record times. Dylan has been ill but showed up and gutted out a tough race.”
Hill and Louk will be at the Wamego Country Club golf course this coming Saturday for the Kansas Class 1-2-3-4A State Cross Country meet. The Class 2A girls race at 9 a.m. and the 2A boys’ race at 10 a.m.
