Allen County Community College sophomore Chris Grause picked up where he left off in the fall. Grause finished third in his second straight college golf tournament.
Yes, there were over five months in between but that’s how the golf season for Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) rolls. Three designated conference tournaments in the fall plus one or two non-conference events and three designated conference tournaments and one or two non-conference events in the spring.
The Red Devil golf team opened the spring portion of the 2008-2009 golf season March 23-24 at Falcon Ridge Golf Course in Kansas City, Kan.
In the Jayhawk Conference designated tournament, Grause finished tied for third with a 155 for the two days. He shot an 80 for the first 18 holes then posted a 75 on the par-72 course for the second day’s 18 holes.
Miles Christensen of Johnson County was first with a 151 and Dale Middleton of Hutchinson took second with 153. Two Kansas City, Kan., Community College players — Tyler Harper and Ben Moser, also carded 155s.
“Chris played very well in tough conditions. On Monday, there were 35 to 45-mile-an-hour winds then Tuesday it was 42 degrees with rain and wind,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC golf coach.
As a team the Red Devils ended up eighth with a 702. Hutchinson won the tournament with a 632 team score, which was five better than second-place Johnson County at 637.
Freshman Will Clark shot a 181 (97-84) for Allen County while freshman Bryant Welch had a 182 (97-85). Sophomore Jake Tynon carded a 187 (90-97) and freshman Nick Agnew had a 191 (96-95).
The Red Devils are off to Hesston Monday for another conference designated tournament. The final designated tournament is April 20-21 at Hutchinson.
Allen County will compete at the William Jewel Spring Invitational tournament, April 9-10, at Liberty, Mo. The NJCAA Region VI, Division II Championships, which determines national tournament qualifiers, is April 26-28 at Pittsburg.
