Freshman teams win in tourney

FORT SCOTT — Iola High’s freshman girls and boys claimed victories Wednesday in the second round of the Fort Scott High freshman basketball tournament.
The Fillies defeated Jayhawk-Linn 32-22. They are 2-0 in tournament play and will take on host Fort Scott at 5 p.m. Friday at FSHS for the championship.
Kendra Taiclet led Iola with 12 points. Lauren Toney added seven and Lisa McFadden had six points.
“It was a great team effort defensively,” said Pat Lonergan, Fillies’ assistant coach.
At Fort Scott’s Buck Run Community Center, Iola’s Mustang freshmen defeated Chanute 64-41. Christian Kauth fired in 27 points.
Drew Walden chipped in with 17 points. Jerrik Sigg had 12 points.
The Mustangs are 1-1 in the tournament. They play Marmaton Valley at 5 p.m. Friday at Buck Run.
“We played very good team defense and we got back to pace we wanted to play at,” said Luke Bycroft, Mustang assistant coach.
