Freshman Fillies go 1-2

COLUMBUS — Iola High’s freshman volleyball team went 1-2 Tuesday on the road.
The Fillies lost to Labette County 25-15, 25-21 to open the night at Columbus. Reagan Ford had two service aces and Alexa Fawson had an ace.
Essence Owens put down two kills for Iola. Chanel Coyne, Tessa Rowe and Fawson each had one kill.
“The two-hour trip left our girls unfocused and boy did they pay for it with their own mistakes,” said Casey Greenwood, IHS assistant coach.
“We had good serving against Columbus and the girls came out with a win.”
Iola defeated Columbus 25-13, 25-6. Fawson went 10 for 10 at the service line with six aces plus had a kill at the net.
Breanna Stout, who served five points in a row, had four ace serves. Alyssa Zimmerman and Ford each had five points in a row and two ace serves in the match. Katie Thompson served three points in a row and had three aces plus two kills in the match. Rowe had one service ace.
“The girls fought hard against Pittsburg but we had 11 missed serves which hurt us,” Greenwood said.
Pittsburg beat Iola 27-25, 25-23. Fawson, who was 16 of 17 serving, went on service runs of six points, five points and three points for Iola. Fawson had three ace serves plus put down five kills at the net.
Stout and Thompson each had three kills. Coyne had one kill. Ford had two service aces while Stout, Zimmerman and Rowe had one ace each.
The Iola freshmen travel to Pittsburg next Tuesday.
