CHICAGO, Ill. — Allen County Community College’s Firestarters, the school’s spirit squad dance team, captured the Open Hip Hop Division national championship at last weekend’s Athletic Championship Series.
The national dance competition was held in Chicago. It was a two-day competition with 20 teams competing.
The Firestarters scored an overall 9.67 out of 10 points on its hip hop dance routine. Members of the winning team are Maggie Stevens, Kenna Thompson, Rebecca Rodecap, Kelcey Caudell, Kelly Ann Carroll and Jullea Decker.
“I’m very proud of our girls,” said Mindy Covey, ACCC spirit program coach. “Along with the national title, the girls received a bid to compete at the international competition in May in San Antonio, Texas.”
Covey said a group had to score a certain number of points in its division to be eligible for a bid to the international competition. The team is raising funds to finance its trip to San Antonio. Anyone interested in donating to the team may contact Covey at ACCC, 620-365-5116, extension 256.
