Fillies finish second in SEK

Iola High’s Fillies made quick work of a makeup doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Fillies did not give up a run as they defeated visiting Parsons High’s Lady Vikings 15-0 in three innings and 10-0 in six innings.
Iola ended the regular season at 15-3 overall. The Fillies ran their Southeast Kansas League record to 14-2, good for second place. Fort Scott won the league title with a 14-1 record.
Four seniors played their final home games Friday Morgan Buchholz, Codi Ellis, Jenna Sigg and Kylie Taylor.
“These four young ladies were recognized for their four years of dedication to our program,” said Vince Coons, Fillies’ head coach.
For the doubleheader, Sigg had four hits — two singles, a triple and a double. Buchholz connected for two singles and double. Ellis hit a single and a double. Taylor had a single.
In the opener, Leah Weir pitched a no-hitter. She was a hit batter away from a perfect three innings of work. She struck out two.
Iola scored 10 runs in the first inning. Ellis had an RBI single, while Taylor drove in two runs with a single and Buchholz had a two-run double.
Sigg’s triple in the third inning plated two runs to make it 14-1. A wild pitch by Parsons allowed Sigg to score and end the game by the 15-run rule in the third inning.
Sigg had a single and a triple and Buchholz had a single and a double. Hitting a single each were Brandi Preston, Ellis, Taylor and Weir.
Breail Thompson was on the mound in the second game for Iola. She allowed four hits, walked two, hit one and struck out five.
The Fillies took advantage of 10 wild pitches by Parsons pitchers and seven walks in the second game. Iola scored a run in the second inning and had a six-run third.
Iola added a run in the fifth inning and closed the game out with two more in the sixth.
Lyndsi Faulhaber and Ellis each had a double. Sigg had a single and a double. Buchholz and Kylee Mc-Karnin each had a single.
The Fillies are in Garnett today for the first round of the Kansas Class 4A Regional Softball Tournament. They take on Chanute (6-11) with first pitch at 4:45 on Field A at the Garnett Sports Complex.
