Fillies capture third at Burlington

A year ago Maggie Wilson vaulted to the state track and field meet for Iola High School. She has spent most of this season grounded because of a stress fracture but Tuesday she was back in action. Wilson won the pole vault at the Burlington Invitational.

BURLINGTON — Welcome back Maggie Wilson.
Iola High’s Fillies were boosted by the return of sophomore Maggie Wilson Tuesday. Wilson has been sidelined with a stress facture in her foot for several weeks.
At Tuesday’s Burlington High Invitational track meet Wilson claimed the gold medal in the pole vault. She cleared 9 feet, 6 inches to win. Then she stepped in for an injured teammate to lead off the Fillies’ 4x100-meter relay team.
The Fillies won the relay race in 53.1 seconds. Wilson combined with Kelsey Larson, Brittney Jacobs and Kendra Taiclet for the victory.
The Fillies scored 75 points to earn the third-place team trophy. Olpe was fourth with 74 points. Chanute won the team title at the 19-school meet with 85 points. Santa Fe Trail had 81 points for second.
Individual medals were awarded to the top four finishers in each event. Eight places were scored for each event.
Jazmyne Honeycutt finished fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.5 seconds. IHS head coach Marvin Smith said Honeycutt hurt her hamstring in the race and was held out of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay races.
Larson was third in the 400-meter dash in 62.4 seconds. Jacobs earned the third-place medal in the triple jump with a leap of 32’21⁄2” and was sixth in the long jump at 15’2”.
Molly Maxwell ran fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 53.3 seconds and Taiclet was fifth in 54.1. Maxwell was sixth, 18.1 seconds, and Taiclet placed eighth, 18.8 seconds, in the 100-meter high hurdles.
Kirstin McGuffin finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 101’9”. Susan Loving was fifth in the shot with a toss of 32’81⁄2”.
Loving also took sixth in the discus with a distance of 102’6”. Katlyn Cleaver was seventh in the event with a throw of 100 feet.
Iola’s 4x400-meter relay team of Taiclet, Larson, Jamie Spears and Jacobs ran fourth in 4 minutes, 29.1 seconds. The 4x800-meter relay team of Spears, Larson, Abby Works and Jordan Dillingham was fifth in 11:10.1.
Iola travels to Chanute Friday for an invitational meet. Field events start at 3:30 p.m.
