Fillies’ JV defeats Pittsburg

PITTSBURG — Iola High’s junior varsity softball team pounded out a 24-6 win over host Pittsburg High Friday. The Fillies’ JV also snatched up a 2-0 win in the second game.
Leah Weir was not just the winning pitcher of the first game, in which she had six strikeouts and issued no walks. Weir also was 3-for-4 in a 19-hit attack by the Fillies. She had an inside-the-park home run, a double and a single.
Lacy Sigg was 4-for-4 with four base hits. Shelby Greenwood connected for two triples and a single while Megan Cook had two doubles and a base hit.
Lauren Toney had three singles. Brandi Preston, Dominique Stokes and Kelsey Adams each had a single.
“We played great defense in the first game,” said Maria Hernandez, IHS assistant coach. “We didn’t hit the ball as well in the second game.”
But the Fillies got a strong pitching performance from Breail Thompson. Hernandez said Thompson and the Fillies’ defense got out of a bases-loaded situation in the contest.
Amanda Carr singled twice and scored both Iola runs in the second game. Preston hit a double. Hitting a single each were Greenwood, Alyssa Rouse and Thompson.
