Eighth-grade Ponies lose finale

COFFEYVILLE — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade football team wrapped the 2009 season up Thursday on the road against Coffeyville.
Coffeyville’s Roosevelt Middle School Roughriders powered past the Ponies 40-6.
“The kids came out and gave their best effort of the season in the first half,” said Marty Taylor, IMS eighth-grade head coach. “We just couldn’t keep it up all game.”
Iola’s lone touchdown came on a 43-yard pass play from Tyler McIntosh to Jesse Zimmerman. McIntosh went 3 of 8 for 68 yards passing.
Besides Zimmerman’s catch, Derrick Weir had one catch for 13 yards and Bryce Misenhelter had a two-yard reception.
John Whitworth’s 63 yards on 11 carries led the Ponies. Whitworth set an IMS eighth-grade season rushing record with 928 yards on 112 carries.
Misenhelter gained seven yards on three carries. McIntosh had four yards on three carries.
