Eighth-grade Ponies lose

BURLINGTON — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade volleyball team went 0-3 at Saturday’s Burlington Middle School tournament.
The Ponies lost 25-8, 25-9 to Burlington. IMS coach Terri Carlin said the Ponies couldn’t pass the tough serves and spikes from Burlington’s girls.
Chanute defeated Iola 25-8, 25-12. Chanute, which went on to win the tournament, was “too strong for us,” according to Carlin.
Prairie View beat Iola 25-14, 25-20.
“We were better in this match but couldn’t stay focused in the end to pull out a win,” Carlin said.
“I was extremely pleased with the play of Allie Cleaver and Courtney Smith coming off the bench. They both made solid passes and Courtney made all her serves.”
For the tournament, Emma Sigg had six ace serves and three kills for Iola. Alexis Hobbs had four ace serves and one kill. Mackenzie Weseloh had one ace and two assists.
Halie Cleaver had one ace and two assists. Paige Miller had one ace serve.
