Eighth-grade Ponies blank Rockets

Derrick Weir (88) went over the middle, made the catch and outran three Royster Middle School defenders to score Iola Middle School’s second touchdown of Thursday’s game. Weir and the Ponies held the Rockets of Chanute at bay to win 36-0 in eighth-grade football action at Riverside Park.

Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade Ponies set the tone early Thursday against Chanute’s Royster Middle School Rockets.
On the first play from scrimmage, Tyler McIntosh threw a swing pass to John Whitworth, who dashed 59 yards for the touchdown. McIntosh threw for another and rushed for two touchdowns in a 36-0 win at home.
“It was a very good effort from all 16 players on the roster,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach. “For the first time all year, we came to play on both sides of the ball.”
Derrick Weir scored on a 19-yard pass from McIntosh in the second quarter and Bryce Misenhelter had the two-point conversion. McIntosh had a one-yard run for a score two minutes later and Whitworth added the two-point conversion.
In the third period, Whitworth had 41 yards for a touchdown run. McIntosh tacked on a 57-yard touchdown run in the fourth with Whitworth scoring the two-point conversion.
Whitworth ended up with 115 yards on 14 carries and three catches for 73 yards. McIntosh rushed for 71 yards on seven carries plus went 6 of 13 passing for 111 yards. He threw two interceptions.
Weir made two catches for 29 yards and Misenhelter had a reception for nine yards.
Misenhelter had four carries for 14 yards rushing. Roger Maynard had four carries for eight yards.
“Dennis Nevin with the offensive line and Steve Taylor with the defensive backs are really doing a great job of coaching,” Taylor said. “Both of those groups had a great night.”
Adam Kauth had an interception for Iola.
Iola improved to 3-0 and plays at Independence next Thursday.
On Monday, the IMS eighth-grade and seventh-grade football teams will hold a jamboree at Riverside Park’s stadium. It begins at 6 p.m.
