Eagle teams claim non-league wins

POMONA — Uniontown High’s basketball teams went on the road and netted non-league wins Tuesday.
Uniontown High’s girls were sparked by the hot shooting of Jacy Ermel from the field and clutch free throw shooting by Abbie Smith.
Ermel shot 7-of-10 from the field on the way to a game-high 18 points with 15 rebounds and four blocks. Smith, meanwhile, drained 8 of 11 free throws as the Eagles downed West Franklin High 48-42.
The victory lifts Uniontown’s record to 8-11 on the season. “The girls really stepped up tonight,” Eagle head coach Ken Holt said. “Jacy and Abbie really played well and set the tone.”
Holt also noted the performance of Breanna Esslinger, who scored nine points with five rebounds. Smith also had five assists. Tiffany Poyner had two steals.
The game was fought to a standstill through the first half, with both squads scoring 11 points in both the first and second quarters. Uniontown led 33-31 by the end of the third period and ended the game with a 15-11 run through the fourth quarter.
Rachel Sleichter led West Franklin with 11 points. Laiken Rockhold and Rose Griffin added 10 points each.
Uniontown’s boys used a 20-5 surge in the third quarter to subdue the West Franklin Falcons. The Eagles never trailed in the game as they won 72-61.
Travis Aikins fired 21 points for Uniontown (9-10) and Drew Johnson added 20. Ben Dixon scored 14 points.
The Falcons were paced by Bryant Harmon and Cord Cunningham with 16 points each. Collin Brady tossed in 13.
The Eagle teams wrap up regular season play at home Friday against Central Heights. Uniontown awaits seedings and pairings for next week’s Class 2A substate hosted by Northeast High in Arma.
