Eagle girls win in OT;
Crest girls lose in tourney openers

YATES CENTER — On a frigid night, Uniontown High’s Eagles and the Sedan High Blue Devils heated up Yates Center High’s east gymnasium Tuesday.
A banked in three-pointer by Sedan’s G.A. Tucker with two seconds left in regulation forced the teams into overtime. The Eagle girls and Blue Devil girls were tied 50-50.
Uniontown took care of business in the extra period, outscoring Sedan 6-0 for a 56-50 win to move into the semifinals of the 2009 Wildcat Winter Classic.
Earlier in the evening, Cherryvale High’s Lady Chargers ran away from Crest High’s Lady Lancers for a 57-21 victory. Cherryvale was up 46-10 at halftime.
So on Thursday, Uniontown (2-0) plays Cherryvale at 6:30 p.m. in the east gym. The winner moves into Saturday’s championship game.
Crest (0-3) and Sedan play in the consolation bracket Friday. Tipoff is is 7 p.m. in the east gym.
Uniontown jumped out in front 11-9 by the end of the first quarter and led 25-15 at halftime. Sedan chipped away in a hotly contested second half.
The Blue Devils outscored the Eagles 19-12 in the third quarter. Uniontown was hanging on to its lead.
“Poor free throw shooting just about did us in tonight” said Ken Holt, Eagle head coach. “We had a couple of opportunities to put it away but couldn’t make free throws.”
The Eagles were 5 of 22 from the free-throw line. The Blue Devils weren’t much better, sinking 11 of 23 charities.
Uniontown shot 47 percent, 25 of 53, from the field to Sedan’s 32 percent, 18 of 56.
Jacy Ermel controlled things inside for the Eagles with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Abbie Smith tossed in 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Breanna Esslinger hit the only three for the Eagles as she had 11 points. Esslinger also dished out five assists. Tiffany Poyner had four steals.
“Jacy had a big game. Abbie got in foul trouble early and Hayden Rathbun was home with the flu. That created some rotation problems. Hope Jurgensen gave us a big game off the bench,” Holt said.
Sedan got 11 points from Chelsie Wade. Tucker and Sarah Buck each had 10 points.
Crest could not stay with Cherryvale Tuesday night. Lady Lancer head coach Brent Smith said although his team lost, the girls showed improvement.
“We just have to continue to get better,” Smith said.
Amanda Strickler scored 11 points for the Lady Lancers.
Mary Reily tossed in 15 points for the Lady Chargers. Andrea Hucke and Bri Smedley added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
