Eagle girls to play for Classic title

YATES CENTER — Being in front on the final lead change of a close game is where a team wants to be. Uniontown High’s Eagle girls defended well the final 10 seconds Thursday night to beat Cherryvale High’s Lady Chargers 48-47.
Abbie Smith hit a runner in the lane with 11 seconds remaining. The Eagles had regained the lead in a back-and-forth fourth quarter.
After Candice Clayton sank the front end of a one-and-one for Uniontown with 40 seconds left. Cherryvale went up 47-46 at the 18-second mark.
“We called a timeout and wanted the first good look we could get. Abbie hit the shot,” said Ken Holt, Uniontown head coach. “It was a fund game to be a part of and our girls played well against a very physical team.”
The win put Uniontown (3-0) in the championship game of the Yates Center High Wildcat Winter Classic. The Eagles play Yates Center at 6:15 p.m. Saturday.
Cherryvale posted a 29-22 halftime lead. Uniontown outscored Cherryvale 15-6 in the third quarter to take a 37-35 lead. Then it was a see-saw battled in the final eight minutes.
Uniontown was led by Jacy Ermel with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Smith had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Uniontown shot 36 percent, 20 of 56, from the field and hit 6 of 16 free throw tries.
Cherryvale got 20 points from Mary Reilly and 10 points from Amy Hougardy. Cherryvale downed 7 of 15 free throw attempts.
