Defense gives Titans upper hand and win

LE ROY — Following an explosive first quarter, it became apparent Friday that the first team to clam down defensively would have the upper hand.
That defense came courtesy of Southern Coffey County High. After allowing 19 first-quarter points to visiting Flinthills High, the Titans allowed only six points thereafter in a 38-25 win.
“We finally calmed down and played solid defense,” Southern Coffey County head coach John Chanley said. “We were a little too anxious for a while.”
That’s because the Titans spent the bulk of their week preparing to stop Flinthills standout Garrett Breech. And for the first 12 minutes of the game, Breech had the upper hand, scoring on runs of 43 and 8 yards and completing a 27-yard touchdown pass.
The Mustangs led 19-16 by the end of the period.
“He’s such a quick and powerful runner,” Chanley said. “We’d go rushing in to make a tackle and found ourselves out of position a few times.”
The Titan offense, meanwhile, utilized a seven-yard touchdown run Ethan Graham followed by a pair of Ben Spencer touchdown passes to take a a 24-19 lead at the break.
The lead ballooned to 30-19 when Drew Parrish scored in the first 30 seconds of the third quarter.
A Flinthills score midway through the fourth quarter closed the gap to 30-25, but Spencer completed his third touchdown of the game, a 27-yarder to Chyler Ludolph. Dylon Wonser capped the scoring by tackling a Mustang runner in the end zone for a safety.
“We weren’t able to move the ball as consistently as I wanted us to in the second half,” Chanley said. “We have to work on that.”
Parrish racked up 115 yards on 14 carries. followed by Graham’s 70 yards on 15 totes. Spencer completed 10 of 16 passes for 132 yards. C. Ludolph had two receptions for 40 yards, Aaron Ludolph had one for 21 and Parrish had two for 20.
Travis Bryan had four solo tackles, 17 in all, to pace the Titan defense, followed by A. Ludolph with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery, C. Ludolph with 10 tackles and Wes Callahan with 15 stops.
Southern Coffey Count (2-1) hosts Burlingame next Friday.
