Cubs sweep Bullpups

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s Cubs swept their final regular season doubleheader Monday at home.
The Cubs defeated the visiting Caney Valley High Bullpups 7-0 and 7-2.
In the opener Thad Wells threw a complete game for the Cubs. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out 11.
The Cubs scored three runs in the second, three more in the fifth and one run in the sixth. They used 12 hits.
Jacob Manbeck connected for two doubles and a single as he was 3-for-4 in the game. Wells had two doubles and Chris Coronado had a single and a double.
Andrew Whitaker and Troy Davis had a double apiece, while Elijah Fried-erich had two singles. Seth Nickell singled.
The second game was closer as the teams were tied at 1-1 after four innings. Humboldt scored five runs in the fifth to break things open. Each team added a run in the sixth.
Whitaker went the distance on the hill for the Cubs in game two. He gave up five hits and walked six. He struck out four.
Friederich cranked out a triple and a single while Manbeck had a double and a single. Davis doubled.
Hitting a single each were Whitaker, Wells, Nickel and Micah Poovey.
With the wins, the Cubs forged no less than co-championship with Yates Center, which is one game back of Humboldt with a makeup game left.
Humboldt is 10-2 in Tri-Valley League play. It will take a 12-4 regular season mark into next week’s Kansas Class 2-1A regional tournament at Yates Center.
