CHERRYVALE — Down 14-0 at halftime, Humboldt High’s Cubs were still in the Tri-Valley League showdown with host Cherryvale High’s Chargers Friday night.
“Mistakes in the kicking game hurt us tonight,” said Mike Miller, Cub head coach, after the Cubs’ 42-6 loss to the Chargers.
“We had a punt that didn’t go past the line of scrimmage late in the first half. They had a short field and scored to go up 14-0. Then we gave up touchdowns on a punt return and a kickoff return.”
Cherryvale’s Roman Lopez scored three touchdowns and made a touchdown pass. Lopez had a 17-yard scoring run with 3:27 left in the second quarter. Then he found Cody O’Brien on a nine-yard scoring strike with 11 seconds on the clock.
“We played good football in the first half. Defensively we played well. Offensively, mental mistakes hurt us,” Miller said, “but we moved the ball.”
Lopez had a 73-yard punt return in the third quarter.
Humboldt’s lone touchdown came on a seven-yard run by Cub quarterback Derrik McCall. It came with 2:16 on the third-quarter clock. The extra-point kick failed.
Mike Bollinger took the ensuing kickoff back 82 yards for a score. Shane Hammer kicked another extra point for the Chargers.
Lopez had a 14-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Tevis Linnebur went 91 yards for the final Cherryvale score.
“We just have to put this one behind us. Move on and start working Monday to prepare of Eureka,” Miller said.
Christian Hicks rushed for 109 yards on 24 carries for the Cubs and McCall had 28 yards on 14 carries. McCall was 6 of 14 passing for 47 yards and two interceptions.
Jarred Barr made one catch for 22 yards and Elijah Friederich had one catch for 14 yards.
Tevin Strack made an interception for Humboldt.
The Cubs (1-1) hosts Eureka next Friday.
