Humboldt High’s Cubs received the No. 6 seed in the 2009 Kansas Class 2-1A State Baseball Tournament.
Since claiming their first-ever regional baseball championship and earning a berth in a state tournament for the first time in 11 years, the Cubs waited for the seedings and pairings. The Class 2-1A state bracket was released Thursday.
The 2-1A state baseball tournament is May 29-30 in Emporia. The event will be played at Soden’s Grove.
Teams have to win on Friday or go home. Kansas high school softball and baseball state tournaments are set up just like the basketball tournaments.
Five teams return from last year’s state tournament including defending champion Pittsburg-St. Mary’s-Colgan. But Moscow (22-0) is the 2009 tournament’s top seed.
Humboldt (15-4) faces third-seeded Sedan (17-2) at 6:30 p.m. next Friday at Soden’s Grove. Sedan and Moscow were to have played for third place in 2008 but rain canceled the game.
If the Cubs get past Sedan, Pittsburg-Colgan could be waiting for them. Colgan earned the No. 2 seed at 19-1 and plays seventh-seeded Chase County (17-5) just before Humboldt’s game.
Chase County along with fourth-seeded Plainville (16-3) were in last year’s tournament.
Moscow opens the tournament playing eighth-seeded Valley Falls (15-5) at 11 a.m. followed by Plainville taking on fifth-seeded Salina-Sacred Heart (19-4).
Semifinals are at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The third-place game is at 3 p.m. and the championship game is at 5:30 p.m.
Humboldt lost to Chase County in last year’s regional championship game.
