Cubs, Lady Cubs notch win over Chargers

CHERRYVALE — Humboldt High’s baseball and softball team won on the road Tuesday.
The Cubs found that 13 was their lucky number. they beat host Cherryvale High’s Chargers 12-1 and 5-3 using 13 hits in both games.
Thad Wells was the winning pitcher in the opener, a five-inning contest. He limited the Chargers to two hits, walked three and struck out eight.
Humboldt scored six runs in the first inning, added single runs in the second and third and plated four runs in the fifth.
Wells had a two-run home run to touch off the first inning for the Cubs and later doubled. Also in the first, Chris Coronado hit a three-run home run.
Andrew Whitaker, Jacob Manbeck and Seth Nickell each had two singles. Troy Davis hit three singles and Elijah Friederich had a base hit.
In the second game, Humboldt rallied for four runs in the fourth inning. and scored a run in the sixth. Cherryvalle had single runs in the first fourth and seventh innings.
Wells connected for a two-run home run in the fourth plus had a single. Friederich had three singles while Coronado had a double and two singles.
Manbeck and Andy Honas each had two singles. Whitaker doubled.
Whitaker got the win as he pitched six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk. He struck out two. Wells earned a save striking out the side in the seventh.
The Cubs improved to 6-4 overall and 6-2 in Tri-Valley League play. They go to Oswego Friday for non-league play.
The undefeated Lady Cubs stayed that way with wins of 9-3 and 3-1. The latter came in a 10-inning game which was tied 1-1 after seven.
Lenzie Boring got both victories on the mound. She allowed five hits and had five strikeouts in the first game. Going the full 10 innings in the second, she walked two, gave up five hits and notched six strikeouts.
In the first game, Humboldt scored four runs in the second to go up 5-0. The Lady Cubs led 8-0 before the Lady Chargers scored.
Boring hit a double and a solo home run and Kelci Owens had a single and a double. Callie Umholtz, Rachel Green and Hannah McCall each had two singles. Megan Dillow singled.
Cherryvale scored a run in the first inning of the second game. Humboldt tied it in the sixth.
The Lady Chargers had the bases loaded with no outs in the ninth but couldn’t score. Humboldt got back-to-back singles from Owens and Umholtz in the top of the 10th.
Bailey Myers’ one-out ground out drove in the go-ahead run. Green singled to drive in another run.
Dillow, Umholtz, Boring and Myers each had two singles. Green had a single and a double. Owens and Kylee Carson had a single apiece.
The Lady Cubs are 10-0 in Tri-Valley League play and 14-0 overall.
