HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s Cubs rolled to a Class 2-1A District 6 and Tri-Valley League victory at home Friday. The Cubs kept Yates Center High’s Wildcats winless.
Humboldt notched a 35-0 victory. The Cubs improved to 3-4 overall and in the Tri-Valley League.
Humboldt and Yates Center are in a three-team district with Olpe . The Cubs at 1-0 in district play should move on into the playoffs at the end of the season.
“We should be in the playoffs unless something strange happens,” said Jeremy Weilert, Humboldt assistant coach. “The kids are starting to do things better on both sides of the football.”
Humboldt jumped out quickly with back-toback touchdowns in the first quarter.
Weilert, who was standing in as head coach Friday for Mike Miller who was off for his wedding, said the Cubs had a nice opening drive. Christian Hicks scored on a 20-yard run with 9:14 left. Hayden Boring kicked the extra point.
Then Derrik McCall intercepted a Wildcat pass and returned it 44 yards to the Yates Center one-yard line. McCall punched it over the goal line on a quarterback sneak. The kick failed but the Cubs were up 13-0.
“We got out to that lead and just put on cruise control. We need to keep our intensity up no matter the score,” Weilert said.
Tevin Strack hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from McCall with 1:11 left in the second quarter. McCall ran in the two-point conversion.
McCall, who was 4 of 12 for 58 yards passing, hit Boring for a 32-yard scoring play at the 1:41-mark of the third quarter. Boring kicked the extra point.
When Hicks took his second interception all the way back 17 yards for a touchdown at the 10:24 mark, it triggered a running clock in the fourth quarter. Boring’s kick made it 35-0.
“We put our reserves in and Yates Center had a good drive. We were able to stop them by forcing a fumble which Michael Zimmerman recovered to preserve the shutout,” Weilert.
The Cubs had 239 yards of total offense, 181 coming on the ground. HIcks led the rushing with 95 yards on 11 carries.
McCall rushed for 57 yards on 13 carries and Trey Johnson had 25 yards on seven hauls plus caught one pass for four yards.
Boring gained four yards on seven carries and had one reception for 32 yards. Strack made two catches for 22 yards.
Yates Center had 135 yards of offense, 52 on the ground and 83 in passing. The Wildcats punted six times for a 19-yard average.
No individual statistics were available for Yates Center.
Humboldt’s defense was led by Kyle Warren with nine tackles and Elijah Friederich with seven tackles.
Hicks had six tackles and an interception. Strack had one of Humboldt’s four interception.
The Cubs have a non-district game at West Elk next Friday. Humboldt ends the season at Olpe in district action, Oct. 29.
