Cubs, Wildcats split TVL games

HUMBOLDT — Yates Center High’s Wildcats scored seven runs in the top of the third on their way to an 11-7 win over host Humboldt High’s Cubs Thursday.
In the doubleheader between the two Tri-Valley League rivals, Yates Center claimed the first game and Humboldt captured a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.
Brent Matile touched off the seven-run third with a home run over the center field wall at Walter Johnson Field. He finished it off with a bases-loaded triple. He also had a single in the game.
Jordan Hughes had a double and a triple for the Wildcats and Nick Leis had a single and a double. Hughes and Leis combined on the mound for the pitching victory for Yates Center.
Michael Bettega had two singles. Hitting a single each for Yates Center were Dalton Smith, Cassidy George, Cody Green and Devin Gregg.
Andrew Whitaker and Seth Nickell pitched for Humboldt. Thad Wells hit a single and a double for the Cubs and Andy Honas had two singles.
Hitting a single each for Humboldt were Elijah Friederich, Jacob Manbeck, Derrik McCall, Billy Schomaker, Nickell and Troy Davis.
In the second game, the Cubs were up 4-1 after two innings. Wells pitched a four-hitter for the Cubs with 12 strikeouts.
Davis had a single and a double for the Cubs. Hitting two singles each were Friederich, Wells, Honas and Whitaker. Nickell had a base hit.
Dalton Smith took the pitching loss for Yates Center. He had one strikeout.
Gregg tripled and Matile doubled for Yates Center. Smith and Bettega had one single each.
