Cub, Wildcat athletes claim medals

CHERRYVALE — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs and Cubs and the Yates Center High Wildcat girls and boys had strong showings at Thursday’s Cherryvale High Invitational track meet.
Humboldt’s Cubs finished third in a field of 13 teams. They were led by Devin Onnen winning the javelin with a throw of 133 feet and Andy Hill winning the 3200-meter run in 11 minutes, 22 seconds.
Rusty Olson placed fourth in the shot put at 36 feet, 8 inches and Onnen was sixth at 36 feet. Olson placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 95’8”.
Hill was third in the 1600-meter run in 5:09. That gold medal went to Yates Center’s Dylan Sicka, who won the race in 4:50. Humboldt Tylar Heidrick was fifth in the 3200-meter run in 12:30.
Sicka also captured gold in the 800-meter run in 2:06.2 with teammate Austin Knobloch in fifth in 2:15.
Humboldt’s Chris Winner took the silver medal in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.09 seconds. Yates Center’s Donnie Bennett was third in 16.3 seconds.
Bennett led a 1-2-4 finish by area runners in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. Bennett won in 42.3 seconds with Humboldt’s Scott Sollars in second at 44.14 seconds. Winner of Humboldt was fourth in 44.88.
Humboldt’s Nick Miller placed third in the 100-meter dash in 11.7 seconds. Sollars finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 37’7”.
Yates Center’s Jacob Pennuto took third in the 400-meter dash in 54.2 seconds.
Pennuto combined with Joe Tressler, Bennett and David Van Noose to turn in a third-place time of 46.6 seconds in the 4x100-meter relay race. Humboldt’s 4x100-meter relay team of Winner, Josh Jay, Jackson Smith and Miller was fourth in 47.33.
Humboldt’s 4x800-meter relay team of Hill, Reece Criger, Heidrick and Sollars posted a silver-medal time of 9:30.
Yates Center’s foursome of Tressler, Bennett, Sicka and Pennuto edged out Humboldt’s foursome of Sollars, Miller, Criger and Winner in the 4x400-meter relay race. Yates Center won the race in 3:43 and Humboldt was second in 3:45.
In the girls’ division, Humboldt’s Raquel Hill won the 3200-meter run in 14:03 and won the 1600-meter run in 6:40. Also in the 3200-meter for the Lady Cubs was Emily Durand, taking third in 18:00.
The Lady Cubs were fifth as a team.
Desi Churning took the silver medal in the javelin with a throw of 86’5” and teammate Chelsie Angleton was sixth at 52’10”.
Darah Tinkler placed fifth in the 400-meter dash in 86 seconds and Churning was sixth in 96 seconds. Michaela Bartlett was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 10’11”.
The Lady Cubs’ 4x800-meter relay team of Hill, Durand, Tinkler and Bartlett finished third in 13:46. Bartlett was sixth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 63 seconds.
Yates Center High’s Haley Bedel claimed the silver medal in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 55 seconds. She also placed sixth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 21.8 seconds.
Brae Adams captured the lone gold medal for the Yates Center girls. Adams won the discus with a throw of 110’6” and teammate Emily Leach was third at 87’9”.
Yates Center and Humboldt prepare for next Thursday’s Tri-Valley League track meet which Yates Center is hosting.
