On a perfect day at the golf course, Iola Middle School’s Ponies finished fifth at the IMS Invitational Wednesday.
“I was pleased with the scores for our kids. They played well for their first big meet,” said Dennis Nevin, IMS golf coach. “We have more work to do improve on our team and individual placings.”
Anderson County Junior High’s Bulldogs captured top team honors. The Bulldogs pulled out a two-stroke win, 201, over Chanute’s Royster Middle School’s Rockets, 203.
Jayhawk-Linn took third with a 216 for the nine-hole event. Coffeyville shot a team score of 227.
The Ponies combined for a 232. Parsons was sixth at 244 followed by Independence at 248 and Pittsburg at 260.
Iola was led by Aaron Barclay’s round of 52. Barclay earned the ninth-place individual medal.
Weston Hines and John Hutton each shot 58. Joe Myrick carded a 64. Hayden Wolf shot a 68 and Trey Wilson had a 79.
Iola’s April Stierwalt hit for a 73 which was fifth in the girls’ division. There were five girls playing in the tournament.
Ashhlyn Connors of Independence had a 69 to win the girls’ division. Neely Henry of Pittsburg and Bree Rogers of Parsons each had a 70. Jade King of Royster shot a 71.
Two Anderson County golfers shot a 40 for the tournament. Top honors went to Jack Rickabaugh and Spencer Walters. Caleb Dietsch of Royster was one shot back, 41, for third.
Independence’s Eric Schlange was fourth with a 46 followed by Chris Gibbs of Coffeyville at 47, Jade Profit of Jayhawk-Linn at 48, Rece Dawson of Jayhawk-Linn at 49 and Wyatt Taylor of Royster with 51. Ben Wright of Coffeyville was 10th with a 54.
The IMS golfers are scheduled to play at Coffeyville Monday.
