Bluestreaks upend Yates Center boys

NEODESHA — Host Neodesha High’s height and defensive intensity proved to be too much for visiting Yates Center High Friday.
The Bluestreaks kept the Wildcat offense off balance with their effective zone.
And any missed shots by Yates Center were corralled by Neodesha’s taller players, Wildcat head coach Jeff Jones said.
Neodesha’s resulting 50-41 win drops Yates Center to 10-3 in Tri-Valley League (14-4 overall).
The Wildcats host Burlington Tuesday to wrap up the regular season. The game will decide whether Yates Center has at least a share of the conference crown. Burlington was at 10-2 entering Friday night’s action.
Jones heaped high praise on Neodesha’s defense.
“They played spectacularly,” he said. “They never really let us get into any sort of offensive flow, and we got very few offensive rebounds. They got plenty of offensive rebounds.”
The Bluestreaks scored the final 11 points in what had been a nip-and-tuck affair, turning a 41-39 deficit into their nine-point victory.
“We were a step slow on defense,” Jones said.
Brent Matile scored 21 points to lead Yates Center. Jordan Hughes scored 11 and Michael Bettega had nine. Those three were the only Wildcat players to score.
Brandon Montgomery scored 17 points and Shawn Livingston had 14 to pace the Bluestreaks.
