On the line was the Lyon County League championship as Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans stepped on the court at Lebo. Lebo, Olpe and Southern Coffey County had shots at winning it outright.
But — it ended up in a three-way tie at the top of the 2009 LCL volleyball standings, all 7-1. The Lady Titans beat Lebo 25-17, 25-22 then lost to Olpe 25-19, 25-19. Lebo defeated Olpe.
Southern Coffey County (28-3) had 42 set assists from Kristen Garland on the night. Shelby Birk had 16 kills, 10 came against Lebo. Laurie Ohl had 14 kills, four blocks and 11 digs. Sam Jacob had seven kills against Lebo. Kaitlin Meyer had 26 digs.
“I think the key for the win over Lebo was anytime there was a long volley we managed to come away with the point,” said Korey Lankton, SCCH head coach. “We weren’t ready to play and Olpe played some good volleyball.”
Lankton said Ashton Gudenkauf had six kills on the night. He said his team was starting to have some balance with five good hitters.”
Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs were at Cherryvale Tuesday in Tri-Valley League play.
The Lady Cubs lost 25-21, 25-23 to Cherryvale. Brandi Malloy and Melissa Davidson each had four kills. Taylyn Wells served three aces and Amanda Maxton had six set assists.
Eureka beat Humboldt 25-12, 25-15. Hannah McCall had six kills and Davidson delivered four kills. Maxton had 11 assists.
“We did not get any wins but we probably played our best volleyball of the season,” said Stephanie Middleton, Humboldt High head coach. “Our passing was very good and everyone was aggressive at the net.”
At Fredonia Tuesday, Yates Center High’s Wildcats dropped two decisions in Tri-Valley League play. Caney Valley beat Yates Center 25-14, 25-19.
“We played sluggishly. We have a lot of sickness but the girls gave it a good shot,” said Dan Berg, YCHS head coach.
Daryean Estes served seven points, had three ace serves and two kills. Kassy Reynolds downed five kills and one block at the net and served one point. Drew Spencer had six set assists and one kill. Bri Crellin served two points and had one ace. Paige Steinforth served one point.
Fredonia beat Yates Center 25-10, 25-14. Serving two points each were Crellin, Reynolds, Estes and Autumn Douglass. Douglass and Reynolds had two ace serves. Spencer and Shannon Stoats each had one point on an ace. Reynolds had three kills and Alexa Stephenson had two kills.
Yates Center’s junior varsity lost 25-15, 25-20 to Caney Valley and lost 25-7, 14-25, 15-5 to Fredonia. Shannon Staats had four kills. Estes had four aces and two kills. Crellin had two aces and Bailee Stuber had two set assists.
No reports came from Crest or Marmaton Valley.
