PARSONS — Iola High’s Mustangs finished fourth at the Parsons High Invitational cross country meet Thursday.
Runners from Iola, Humboldt, Yates Center, Marmaton Valley and Crest competed in the meet at Big Hill Reservoir. There were 18 schools in the meet.
Chanute won the boys’ varsity race title with 41 points followed by Labette County with 65 and Independence with 71 points.
There were 20 individual medals awarded in the boys’ 5K varsity race.
Iola’s Roman Yocham captured the second-place medal, running the race in 18 minutes 14 seconds. Right behind Yocham in third place was Marmaton Valley’s Zach Louk in 18:19.
Yates Center’s Dylan Sicka earned the fifth-place medal in 18:38. Crest High’s Dustin Davis-Jones was seventh in 18:54.
Also collecting an individual medal for the Mustangs was Bryan Miller. Miller finished 16th in 19:55. Aaron Cheung placed 25th in 20:23 followed by Seth Kristalyn in 29th at 20:46, Dylan Lower in 34th in 21:00 and Ryan Weir in 46th in 22:03.
“Roman had a standout race in a tough field,” said Marvin Smith, Iola head coach. “I told him to run easy since he was out of school Monday and Tuesday and still taking medicine. I told him not to be concerned about the top five positions. He followed that advice until the gun fired.”
Smith said Miller had been running as Iola’s number seven runner but had a great race at Parsons. The Mustangs were missing two runners — Kent Toland, out because of the community play, and Ryan Latta, out because of illness.
Crest’s Trevor Holman placed 27th in the varsity race in 20:34. Yates Center’s Paul Stockebrand, running the 5K distance for the first time this season, was 40th in 21:12.
Humboldt’s Cody Wright placed 35th in the varsity race, running it in 21:03. Humboldt head coach Eric Carlson said Wright ran well in a very competitive race.
Humboldt’s Raquel Hill claimed the ninth-place medal in the girls’ varsity 4K race. Hill’s time was 19:23.
“Raquel is running better with each meet and she continues to challenge herself each day in practice,” Carlson said.
Crest’s Italy Loving earned the 10th-place medal in 19:37. Yates Center’s Cherokee Shaffer placed 18th in 21:16.
“I think this was one of the better races Cherokee has run,” said Kevin Barnes, Yates Center head coach.
Moving to the girls’ junior varsity 4K race, which awarded 15 medals, Iola’s Sydney Owens, Leah Weir and Kristen Linn earned medals. Owens placed third in 20:15 followed by Weir in fifth in 20:33 and Linn was 11th in 21:36.
“Sydney walked several times during the race simply because she’s not in condition yet after a late start this fall,” Smith said. “Leah is still recovering from a bout of flu.”
Iola was without Jennica Rausch, who is out for medial reasons.
Marmaton Valley’s Jamee McEndree placed 10th in the field of 36 runners. Her time was 21:35.
Crest had Delanie Cammack in 34th and Kurston Gilliland in 36th. No times were given for the two girls.
Iola won the boys’ junior varsity 4K race with 24 points. Chanute was second with 41 points.
The Mustangs took five of the 15 medals given in the race. Michael Middleton won the race in 16:12 with Garrett Catron in second place at 16:32.
Josh Klubek ran sixth in 16:55 followed by Chris Harrington in eighth at 17:11. Brent Clark was 12th in 17:21.
Other Iola runners were: 39. Tyler Shelby, 18:58; 40. Jarrett Mosbrucker, 18:59; 56. Dustin Jones, 19:48; 61. Matthew Cunningham, 20:03; 66. Lee Berg, 20:25, 68. Johnny Adams, 20:33; 74. Shae Beasley, 21:08.
Marmaton Valley’s Ryan Smith took the 10th-place medal in 17:13. Carlos Gonzales was 27th in 18:10.
Crest’s Chris Brallier earned the 13th-place medal in 17:24. David Womelsdorf was 20th in 17:52 and Jory Ramsey took 49th in 19:32.
Humboldt, which was sixth as a team, was led by Jacob Jones in 17th in 17:35. Nick Keazer took 35th in 18:43 followed by Dylan Greve in 46th at 19:16, Chris Headley in 62nd in 20:07, Ezra Bartlett in 71st in 20:47, Jackson Smith in 76th in 21:16, Kile Martin in 77th in 21:27, Riley Herder in 78th in 21:40 and Brett Heslop in 88th in 26:41.
Humboldt, Yates Center, Marmaton Valley and Crest will join Iola and others Tuesday in the annual Iola High Doc Stiles Invitational meet. The meet is Tuesday instead of Thursday to allow area runners compete at Rim Rock on Saturday in Lawrence.
The Doc Stiles Invitational begins at 4 p.m. The course winds through Riverside Park. There will be a freshman boys’ race, junior varsity girls and boys races and varsity races for girls and boys.
