ACCC men fall twice in Citizens Bank Classic

Playing at home against two quality opponents, Allen County Community College’s men came up short on both nights of the 2009 Citizens Bank Classic.
The Red Devils came back from a 14-point deficit in the first half to trail by five points at the break. Sophomore Aaron Jackson hit three three-pointers in the final two minutes of the half for ACCC.
In a scramble of a second half, the Red Devils battled with the Jets of Northern Oklahoma College-Enid. It took a three-pointer as the 35-second shot clock expired by sophomore Anthony Clagett to tie the game at 62-62.
That was with 1:05 left in regulation. NOC’s Spencer Smith missed on a one-and-one then Ben Smith couldn’t get a putback to go in. The basketball went out of bounds and was awarded to the Jets with 37.3 seconds on the clock.
Allen County’s defense denied an inbound pass by NOC.
“We had the ball and an opportunity to win it in regulation. It was an open look and just didn’t go down,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC head coach.
Then nothing would go down for the Red Devils in the five-minute overtime period. The Jets sped away on a 9-1 run to win Friday’s contest 71-63.
“We got tired. They scouted us very well and took Anthony (Clagett) out of play for us after the great game he had here Tuesday,” Hayes said. “For them, Ben Smith showed why he is a preseason All-American. They know how to play him and get the ball to him well.”
Allen County couldn’t regroup well enough for Saturday’s Classic contest against State Fair Community College of Sedalia, Mo.
The Roadrunners held the Red Devils to 18 first-half points. State Fair was up 32-18 at the break and held off any rallies to win 61-45.
Fort Scott Community College had beaten State Fair 74-66 on Friday. NOC-Enid downed Fort Scott 62-55 Saturday.
The Red Devils dropped to 1-3 overall. They play tonight at home against the Bacone College junior varsity. Tipoff is 8 o’clock.
Allen County shot 39 percent, 22 of 56, from the field against NOC-Enid on Friday. The Red Devils hit just 10 of 21 free throw attempts.
“We’re struggling to find our identity offensively,” Hayes said. “It will be nice to have everybody healthy and back ready to play. We haven’t played a regular season game with our whole team yet.”
Jackson, who sat out Tuesday’s game, hit 5 of 6 threes in Friday’s game as he scored 19 points for ACCC. Jackson also handed out five assists.
Andra Bailey scored 11 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for the Devils. He had four steals.
Dennis Rumph controlled nine of the team’s 34 rebounds. Allen County had 20 turnovers.
NOC’s Ben Smith fired in 31 points, as he went 8 of 10 at the free-throw line. Mychael Hearn added 15 points.
The Jets were 26 of 61, 43 percent, from the field. They cashed in 14 of 22 free throw attempts.They had 52 rebounds.
On Saturday, Jackson and Erik Law each tossed in 11 points for the Red Devils against State Fair. Greg Hayes connected for 10 points.
Allen County shot 42 percent, 19 of 45, from the field but only hit 2 of 12 free throw tries.
Bailey pulled in 11 rebounds and Rumph had seven. Clagett had five assists and Bailey had four steals.
No other information on the game was available. No individual statistics for State Fair were available.
State Fair did hit 15 of 17 free throw tries. The Roadrunners shot 42 percent, 21 of 49, from the field.
