PITTSBURG — Under the same conditions they have played most of their spring season, Allen County Community College’s Red Devils defended their Region VI, Division II Golf Championship.
Lightning and rain delays had Pittsburg’s Crestwood Country Club golf course very wet on Monday and Tuesday. The Red Devils played through.
Sophomore Chris Grause went into the tournament as defending individual champion. He came out as two-time Region VI, Division II champion.
“It’s a great feeling to be champion two years in a row plus we as a team are champions both years,” Grause said. “This year’s tournament was more competitive and the playing conditions weren’t very good.”
But Grause and his teammates combined for a team total 980 for the 54-hole tournament. The Red Devils landed three of the top five individual spots, which put three Red Devils into the NJCAA Division II National Golf Tournament.
Grause, who is from Topeka’s Seaman High School, carded a 227, which was one -stroke higher than last year’s winning score. He had rounds of 75, 75 and 77.
“Chris dominated the field,” said sophomore teammate Andrew Rogers, who is from Raymore, Mo. “The weather was the worse we’ve had to play in this season but we’ve had to play in rain and cold conditions all season.”
Rogers and freshman Nick Agnew, who is also from Seaman High School, tied for fourth place with scores of 251. Rogers shot rounds of 81, 84 and 86 while Agnew went 80, 83 and 86.
Grause and Rogers are making their second trip to the national tournament. Grause finished 115th and Rogers was 120th at the national tournament last year.
“Yes, we’re looking to do better,” Grause said.
“But we’re also plan to have fun in our last tournament playing for Allen County,” Rogers said.
“We want to do well but just really enjoy the experience of the national tournament this year,” Grause added.
Agnew said it felt great to be on a regional championship team and qualify for the national tournament.
“I’m glad the whole team was able to win the championship,” Agnew said. “I’m excited about playing at the national tournament and going with two teammates.”
Freshmen Will Clark, Wamego, and Gavin Cole, Moran, weren’t far behind their teammates. Clark shot a 253 (83-82-88) and Cole had a 259 (89-82-88).
“Being part of a regional championship is great. I hope our guys do well at nationals,” Cole said.
“It’s a honor to win a regional championship and we’re looking to come back next year and win it three years in a row,” Clark said.
Grause, Rogers and Agnew will prepare for the NJCAA Division II national tournament at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala. The tournament is May 19-22.
